About Roger Shurtleff
I have always had a passion for creating. Born in the Seattle area, my talent grew because of my artistic family. My father, in particular, encouraged art to be an integral part of my life. I was adept at many jobs in my youth, from bartender to forest ranger to training as a pilot. However, my strong urge to represent my ideas and feelings in medium led me to earn a BA from the University of Washington. Embracing the call from my youth, I continue to pursue my gift for making visual art.
I paint in many mediums: acrylic on paper, oil on linen, encaustic on panel. In all of them I strive to follow my introspective nature, and a fascination with historical, cultural, and natural narratives. I wish to create contemporary work as profound and mythic as petroglyphs and religious icons. In these older art forms, I see threads that extend to the present, and I seek to reflect their essence in my artwork.
